Weather Update: Heavy Rainfall Expected in Northeast and Andaman & Nicobar Islands

On September 18, 2024, the depression over northeast Madhya Pradesh moved west-northwestwards and weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area. This weather system is expected to continue moving west-northwest across northeast Madhya Pradesh and southwest Uttar Pradesh. Within the next 24 hours, it will likely weaken into a low-pressure area, signaling a decrease in its intensity.

Monsoon Trough Position and Movement

The monsoon trough is currently in an unusual position. The western end of the trough lies north of its normal position, while the eastern end is south of its usual track. This displacement is contributing to varying weather patterns across different regions of the country, including widespread rainfall and localized heavy showers.

Rainfall Predictions for Central and Northwest India

In central India, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall is expected over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh throughout the week. Isolated areas in north Madhya Pradesh are likely to experience very heavy rainfall on September 18. Similarly, northwest India, including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and East Rajasthan, will see scattered to fairly widespread rainfall. Some regions, like southwest Uttar Pradesh and north Madhya Pradesh, may experience isolated incidents of very heavy rainfall during the same period.

Weather Outlook for East, Northeast, and Peninsular India

In the eastern and northeastern parts of the country, widespread light to moderate rainfall is predicted, especially in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Assam, Meghalaya, and parts of the northeast such as Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in these areas between September 18 and 20. Meanwhile, the west and southern peninsular regions, particularly Konkan & Goa, will also experience fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall throughout the week.

This weather update reflects the changing monsoon dynamics and highlights the need for preparedness in regions expecting heavy rainfall and possible flooding.
