Weather: Heavy Rainfall Warnings Issued Across India by IMD

Weather: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a comprehensive weather forecast, indicating significant weather systems and issuing warnings for various regions across India over the next few days.

Weather Systems:

  • Low-Pressure Area: A low-pressure area is present over south Odisha and neighboring regions, with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height.
  • Monsoon Trough: The monsoon trough is positioned south of its normal position, extending up to lower tropospheric levels, and is expected to remain south of its normal position for the next 4-5 days.
  • Off-Shore Trough: An off-shore trough runs along the south Gujarat-north Kerala coasts at mean sea level.
  • Shear Zone: A shear zone exists in the lower and middle tropospheric levels roughly along 20°N, tilting southwards with height.
  • New Low-Pressure Area: A fresh low-pressure system is expected to develop over the west-central and adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal around July 19.

Weather Forecast & Warnings:

West, Central, and South Peninsular India:

  • Expect fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Kerala & Mahe, Lakshadweep, Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana, and Rayalaseema over the next 5 days.
  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in isolated places over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Kerala & Mahe during this period.
  • Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Coastal & South Interior Karnataka on July 16.
  • Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Chhattisgarh, North Interior Karnataka from July 16-20; Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha from July 16-18; Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on July 16.
  • Isolated very heavy rainfall is expected over West Madhya Pradesh on July 16; Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana from July 18-20.

East & Northeast India:

  • Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Northeast India, and Odisha; scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand over the next 5 days.
  • Heavy rainfall is expected in isolated places over Odisha from July 16-20; Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim on July 16; Andaman & Nicobar Islands on July 16-17.
  • Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha on July 19-20.

Northwest India:

  • Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and East Rajasthan; isolated to scattered rainfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and West Rajasthan over the next 5 days.
  • Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Uttarakhand and East Rajasthan from July 16-20; West Uttar Pradesh on July 17-18; East Uttar Pradesh on July 17; West Rajasthan on July 16 and 18; and Himachal Pradesh on July 17-18.
  • Isolated very heavy rainfall is expected in Uttarakhand on July 17-18 and in East Rajasthan on July 18.

The IMD advises residents in the affected areas to stay alert and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of intense weather activity.
