Weather: Rainfall and Heat Wave Warnings Across India

Weather: As of May 24, 2024, the Southwest Monsoon has advanced further into parts of the Maldives, the Comorin area, the South Bay of Bengal, and the remaining parts of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea. It has also reached parts of the East-central Bay of Bengal. The Northern Limit of the Monsoon is currently passing through coordinates 05°N/60°E, 06°N/70°E, 7°N/75°E, 8°/80°E, 11°N/85°E, 13.5°N/90°E, and 17°N/95°E.

Conditions are favorable for the further advance of the Southwest Monsoon into additional areas of the South Bay of Bengal, Central Bay of Bengal, and parts of the Northeast Bay of Bengal over the next two days.

Cyclonic Circulations

Two significant cyclonic circulations are influencing the weather:

  1. Over South Kerala and neighboring regions, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.
  2. Over Northeast Madhya Pradesh and surrounding areas, at 1.5 km above mean sea level.

These circulations are expected to bring widespread light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) to Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Coastal Karnataka, and isolated areas of Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Interior Karnataka from May 24 to 26. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely in these regions, with particularly intense rainfall in Kerala and Mahe on May 24.

Depression Over East central Bay of Bengal

A depression over the East-central Bay of Bengal has been moving north-northeastwards at a speed of 8 kmph. As of 1730 hrs IST on May 24, 2024, it is centered at 16.2°N and 89.1°E, approximately 650 km south of Khepupara (Bangladesh), 620 km south-southeast of Sagar Islands (West Bengal), and 670 km south of Canning (West Bengal). This system is expected to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm by the morning of May 25, moving northwards and potentially developing into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by the night of May 25. It is projected to cross the coasts of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal between Sagar Island and Khepupara around midnight on May 26, with wind speeds of 110-120 kmph, gusting up to 130 kmph.

Rainfall Warnings

  • West Bengal: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in coastal districts on May 26 and 27, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall on May 26.
  • Odisha: Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over North Coastal Odisha on May 25 and 26.
  • Northeastern States: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Mizoram, Tripura, and South Manipur on May 26, and across Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura on May 27 and 28. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated over Assam and Meghalaya on May 27 and 28, Arunachal Pradesh on May 28, and Mizoram and Tripura on May 27.
  • Andaman Islands: Isolated heavy rainfall is likely on May 24 and over north Andaman Islands on May 25.

Fishermen Warnings

Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the South Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea until May 24, the Central Bay of Bengal until May 26, and the North Bay of Bengal from May 25 to 27. Those already at sea are urged to return to the coast.

Heat Wave and Temperature Observations

  • High Temperatures: Maximum temperatures range from 44-48°C in parts of West Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Vidarbha, and isolated pockets of East Rajasthan and Saurashtra & Kutch. Temperatures between 40-44°C are prevalent in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Marathwada, Odisha, Telangana, Rayalaseema, and parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
  • Heat Wave Warnings: Heat wave conditions are likely in isolated pockets across Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Gujarat, West Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra through May 28. Severe heat wave conditions are expected in many parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh.
  • Warm Night and Humid Conditions: Warm night conditions are expected in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. Hot and humid weather is likely in Assam, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Gujarat.
