Weather: Heavy Rainfall Expected in West, Central, and South Peninsular India

Several weather systems are currently influencing the Indian subcontinent. A cyclonic circulation persists over Jharkhand and neighboring regions at both lower and middle tropospheric levels. The monsoon trough remains active and is positioned near its normal trajectory, expected to maintain this alignment over the next 4-5 days. A shear zone extends along 22°N, tilting southwards with height in the lower and middle tropospheric levels. Additionally, an offshore trough at mean sea level stretches along the South Gujarat to North Karnataka coasts. Further cyclonic circulations are present over southwest Rajasthan and northwest Uttar Pradesh at lower tropospheric levels.

The regions of West, Central, East, and South Peninsular India can expect fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall, often accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next five days. Isolated incidents of extremely heavy rainfall are anticipated in Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra on July 24th. Very heavy rainfall is predicted in isolated locations over Odisha from July 24th-26th, Konkan and Goa on July 25th-26th, Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat from July 25th-28th, as well as Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh on July 24th, and Kerala & Mahe on July 25th. Heavy rainfall is also expected in scattered areas across Odisha, Kerala & Mahe, Karnataka from July 24th-28th, Jharkhand, Vidarbha on July 24th, Konkan & Goa on July 27th-28th, and Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh from July 25th-28th.

Northwest India is likely to experience scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Punjab, West Uttar Pradesh, and isolated to scattered rainfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, West Rajasthan, and East Uttar Pradesh during the next five days. Isolated very heavy rainfall is anticipated over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and East Rajasthan on July 24th. Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and East Rajasthan from July 24th to 28th, and West Uttar Pradesh and Jammu on July 24th. Above-normal temperatures with high humidity are likely to prevail over Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi during the next 24 hours.

Northeast India is expected to witness fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over the next five days. Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh on July 24th and in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Manipur from July 24th-25th.
