Weather: IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall Across West and Central India from July 27-31

Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts heavy rainfall across various regions of India from July 27-31, 2024, due to a well-marked low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and a series of cyclonic circulations and shear zones.

Weather: Low-pressure area and Monsoon Trough

A well-marked low-pressure area currently lies over Gangetic West Bengal and north Odisha, with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. This system is expected to move west-northwestwards over the next 24 hours. The monsoon trough remains active and near its normal position, with a shear zone present along 18°N.

Weather: Off-Shore Trough and Rainfall Forecast

An off-shore trough at mean sea level extends from South Gujarat to north Kerala coasts, contributing to significant rainfall. Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is anticipated across West and Central India. Isolated instances of extremely heavy rainfall are expected over the Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on July 27. Very heavy rainfall is anticipated in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Saurashtra & Kutch, and the Gujarat region on specific dates.

Weather: Northwest India Rainfall

Northwest India will experience fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning. Isolated very heavy rainfall is expected in Uttarakhand and East Rajasthan, while heavy rainfall is likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on various dates.

Weather: South Peninsular India Rainfall

Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is forecasted for Kerala, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, and Telangana. Very heavy rainfall is predicted for Coastal and South Interior Karnataka on July 27, with heavy rainfall expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, and North Interior Karnataka.

East & Northeast India Rainfall

East and Northeast India will see fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning. Very heavy rainfall is expected in Odisha on July 30, while isolated heavy rainfall is likely in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland & Manipur, Jharkhand, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim on specific dates. Hot and humid conditions will prevail over Assam and Tripura for the next two days.
