As the monsoon season advances, various weather systems are influencing the climatic conditions across India. The following is an in-depth update on the current weather patterns, forecasts, and warnings.

Northern Limit of Monsoon

The (Northern Limit of Monsoon) NLM continues to pass through:

  • 05°N/60°E
  • 06°N/70°E
  • 6.5°N/75°E
  • 7.5°N/80°E
  • 10°N/85°E
  • Maya Bandar
  • 16°N/100°E

Conditions are favorable for the further advance of the Southwest Monsoon over parts of the South Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the Andaman Sea, and parts of the east-central Bay of Bengal over the next two days.

Cyclonic Circulation and Low Pressure Area

A cyclonic circulation over South Kerala has formed a Low-Pressure Area over the Southeast Arabian Sea off the Kerala coast, extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. This system is expected to bring:

  • Rainfall: Widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over Kerala & Mahe, Lakshadweep, Coastal & South Interior Karnataka. Isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, North Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the next five days.
    • Heavy Rainfall: Isolated heavy rainfall over Coastal & South Interior Karnataka on May 23; Lakshadweep on May 23-24; Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on May 24; Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Kerala on May 25.
    • Very Heavy Rainfall: Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on May 23 and Kerala & Mahe on May 24.
    • Extremely Heavy Rainfall: Isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Kerala & Mahe on May 23.
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands: Widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall is expected during May 23-25.
  • Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra: Isolated light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) during May 23-25; Marathawada on May 23, and Vidarbha on May 23-24.

Cyclonic Circulation Over Bihar and Trough from Southeast Rajasthan to Jharkhand

This system is expected to cause:

  • Rainfall: Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over Gangetic West Bengal and isolated to scattered rainfall over Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand over the next seven days.
  • Northeast India: Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura during the next seven days. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on May 26-27, with isolated very heavy rainfall on May 27.

Well-Marked Low-Pressure Area Over Bay of Bengal

A well-marked low-pressure area lies over the West-central and adjoining South Bay of Bengal, expected to intensify:

  • Movement: It is likely to move northeastwards, concentrating into a depression by the morning of May 24 and further intensifying into a Cyclonic Storm over the East-central Bay of Bengal by May 25 morning. It is anticipated to move northwards, reaching near Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by May 26 evening as a Severe Cyclonic Storm.

Heavy Rainfall and Wind Warnings

  • West Bengal and Odisha: Light to moderate rainfall with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on May 26-27.
  • Mizoram, Tripura, South Manipur: Light to moderate rainfall with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on May 26-27.
  • Wind: Squally weather with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is expected over the central and adjoining South Bay of Bengal on May 23, increasing to 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph over the North Bay of Bengal by May 26.
  • Sea Conditions: Rough to very rough sea conditions are expected over the Bay of Bengal and along the coasts of Bangladesh, West Bengal, and Odisha.

Heat Wave and Warm Night Conditions

  • Maximum Temperatures: Many areas are experiencing temperatures above 40°C, with Rajasthan reaching up to 47°C.
  • Heat Wave Conditions: Isolated pockets of Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Gujarat, West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Delhi are likely to experience heat wave conditions.
  • Hot and Humid Weather: Likely over Assam and Konkan & Goa.
  • Warm Nights: Expected over West Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh.
