The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into additional parts of the Southwest Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal, parts of the Central Bay of Bengal, and parts of the Northeast Bay of Bengal as of May 25, 2024. The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) now passes through coordinates 05°N/60°E, 06°N/70°E, 07°N/75°E, 08°N/80°E, 13°N/85°E, 17°N/90°E, 20°N/95°E, and 23°N/100°E. Conditions are favorable for the further advance of the monsoon over these regions within the next 24 hours.

Cyclonic Circulations

  1. South Kerala & Neighbourhood: A cyclonic circulation extends up to 3.1 km above mean sea level.
  2. Vidarbha & Neighbourhood: A cyclonic circulation is noted at 1.5 km above mean sea level.
  3. Southeast Rajasthan & Neighbourhood: A cyclonic circulation extends up to 0.9 km above mean sea level, with a trough running from this circulation to Telangana across Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha at the same level.

Impact and Forecast

  • Kerala & Mahe, Lakshadweep & Coastal Karnataka: Expect fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over the next seven days. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely from May 26-29.
  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Telangana, Interior Karnataka: Scattered light/moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) on May 26.
  • Chhattisgarh: Isolated light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) on May 26.
  • Jharkhand & Bihar: Similar conditions expected from May 26-28.
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands: Strong surface winds (40-50 kmph) on May 26.
  • Rajasthan: Strong surface winds (25-35 kmph) from May 26-29.

Severe Cyclonic Storm “Remal”

The Cyclonic Storm “Remal” has intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm and is currently centered over the North Bay of Bengal. Its coordinates are approximately 19.5°N latitude and 89.3°E longitude, about 290 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh) and 330 km south of Mongla (Bangladesh). It is moving northwards at a speed of 6 kmph and is expected to intensify further, crossing the Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara by midnight on 26 May 2024, with wind speeds of 110-120 kmph, gusting to 135 kmph.

Heavy Rainfall Warnings:

  • West Bengal: Light to moderate rainfall with heavy to very heavy rainfall at several places, isolated extremely heavy rainfall on May 26. Peak activity is expected from noon of May 26 to noon of May 27.
  • Odisha: Light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall over North Coastal Odisha on May 26.
  • Northeastern States: Light to moderate rainfall with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Mizoram, Tripura, and South Manipur on May 26, and over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura on May 27-28. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely over Assam and Meghalaya on May 27-28, Arunachal Pradesh on May 28, and Mizoram and Tripura on May 27.

Fishermen Warnings:

Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the south Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea till May 26, central Bay of Bengal till May 26, and North Bay of Bengal till May 27. Those at sea should return to the coast.

Heat Wave, Warm Night, and Hot & Humid Weather Warnings:

  • Heat Wave Conditions: Isolated pockets in Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, and Vidarbha from May 26-30. West Uttar Pradesh on May 29-30, East Uttar Pradesh from May 26-28, Chhattisgarh from May 27-30, Gujarat State on May 26, and East Madhya Pradesh on May 26, 29-30.
  • Severe Heat Wave Conditions: Parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana-Chandigarh from May 26-30; West Uttar Pradesh from May 26-28; isolated pockets in West Madhya Pradesh on May 26, and East Madhya Pradesh on May 27-28; Delhi from May 26-30.
  • Hot and Humid Weather: Gujarat State on May 26-27.
  • Warm Night Conditions: Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi from May 26-30, and Uttar Pradesh on May 26-27.
