Weather Systems Update: Depression Over Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea

The weather systems update for today, 16th October 2024, focuses on two key depressions—one over the Bay of Bengal and the other over the Arabian Sea—bringing significant weather changes to South Peninsular and West India. These systems are expected to bring heavy rainfall, with some regions experiencing extreme weather conditions.

Weather Systems Update: Depression over the Bay of Bengal

A depression has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal and moved west-northwestwards at a speed of 12 kmph over the last six hours. As of 0530 IST, it was centered near latitude 12.1°N and longitude 83.4°E, about 360 km east-southeast of Chennai, 390 km east of Puducherry, and 450 km southeast of Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. This weather systems update indicates that the depression is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross the north Tamil Nadu-South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai, by the early morning of 17th October.

Depression over the Arabian Sea

Another weather systems update reports that the depression over the west-central Arabian Sea, off the Oman coast, has been moving northwestwards at 23 kmph over the past six hours. It crossed the Oman coast near latitude 19.35°N and longitude 57.7°E, close to Duqm (Oman), between 2230 and 2330 IST on 15th October. The system now lies as a well-marked low-pressure area and is expected to gradually weaken as it continues moving northwestwards over Oman.
