Weather Update: Anticipating Isolated Precipitation Across India

The recent weather patterns across northern and central India have brought about diverse conditions, impacting temperatures and precipitation. A closer look at the weather systems in play and the forecasts for the next five days reveals a dynamic scenario.

Current Minimum Temperatures: Yesterday, the minimum temperatures spanned from 6-12°C over significant parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, northwest Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh, south Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and interior Odisha. Notably, the northern parts of the country experienced temperatures ranging from normal to above normal.

Weather Systems at Play:

  1. Western Disturbance: A notable weather system, observed as a trough in middle tropospheric levels between Lat. 38°N/Long. 74°E and Lat. 30°N/Long. 80°E, is influencing the current weather conditions.
  2. Cyclonic Circulation: Another factor contributing to the weather dynamics is the Cyclonic Circulation over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal in lower tropospheric levels.

Forecast and Warnings:

  • Isolated Rainfall/Snowfall: Expect isolated light rainfall/snowfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh on December 24th, 2023.
  • Rainfall in Southern Regions: Anticipate light to moderate rainfall at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe, and the Lakshadweep area in the next five days.
  • Northeast India Conditions: Light to moderate rainfall is likely in isolated places over Northeast India during the next two days. Additionally, isolated thunderstorms with hailstorms are expected over Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on December 24th, 2023.

Dense Fog Warning:

  • December 24th & 25th: Dense to very dense fog conditions are likely in the morning hours at isolated pockets of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
  • December 24th: Over Haryana & Northwest Rajasthan.
  • December 25th–28th: Dense fog conditions are anticipated in the morning hours in isolated pockets of Haryana, Punjab, north Rajasthan, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh.
  • December 26th: In north Madhya Pradesh.
  • December 27th & 28th: Over Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.

Minimum Temperatures Forecast:

  • East India: Minimum temperatures are expected to rise by 2-3°C in the next 24 hours, with no significant change thereafter.
  • General Forecast: No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over most parts of the country during the next 4-5 days.
