Cessation of Northeast Monsoon Rains
The IMD forecasts favorable conditions for the cessation of Northeast Monsoon rains over several regions, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and South Interior Karnataka. This transition is expected to occur around January 15, 2024, allowing for a shift in weather patterns.
Western Disturbances and Precipitation
A Western Disturbance is currently observed as a trough in the middle tropospheric westerlies, extending roughly along Long. 56°E to the north of Lat. 32°N. This disturbance is influencing weather conditions in Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad, with light rainfall and snowfall predicted at isolated places on January 13.
Another fresh Western Disturbance is anticipated to affect the Western Himalayan Region from January 16, 2024. This disturbance is likely to bring light rainfall and snowfall to isolated places in Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on specific dates mentioned in the forecast.
Dense Fog and Cold Day Warning
Dense to very dense fog conditions are expected in various parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh, with warnings extending for the next 3-4 days. Additionally, isolated pockets in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, north Madhya Pradesh, West Rajasthan, Bihar, Odisha, East Rajasthan, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to experience dense fog conditions during specific periods.
Cold day to severe cold day conditions are expected to persist in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on January 13, with isolated pockets experiencing cold day conditions for the subsequent 3-4 days. Similar conditions are forecasted for Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh on January 13, 2024.
Temperature Forecast and Cold Wave Warning
The IMD predicts a gradual fall of 2-3°C in minimum temperatures over many parts of Central and East India in the next two days, with no significant change thereafter. In Northwest India, minimum temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable over the next 4-5 days.
Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are likely to continue in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on January 13, with cold wave conditions persisting in isolated pockets on January 14. Similar conditions are expected in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar during the specified dates. Ground frost conditions in isolated pockets are also anticipated in Uttarakhand, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana on January 13, 2024.
