Weather Update: Cyclone Tej Expected to Intensify and Impact Oman-Yemen Coast

The fury of Mother Nature often reminds us of her undeniable power, and the recent intensification of Cyclone Tej serves as a stark reminder of this reality. Located in the Western Arabian Sea and Southwestern Arabian Sea, Cyclone Tej has escalated to an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm (ESCS), with ominous implications for the coastal regions in its path.

As of 0830 hours IST on October 22nd, Cyclone Tej found itself positioned approximately 160 kilometers east-southeast of Socotra, Yemen. It further sits 540 kilometers south-southeast of Salalah, Oman, and 550 kilometers southeast of Al Ghaidah, Yemen. The cyclone’s projected trajectory suggests a northwestward course, with an expected coastal crossing that may occur between Al Ghaidah and Salalah around noon on October 24th. As Cyclone Tej approaches the coast, it may intensify into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS), further heightening the potential for severe weather conditions in the affected regions.

“Meanwhile, over the Western Central Bay of Bengal (BoB), another meteorological entity demands attention. A depression, characterized by its relatively low atmospheric pressure and associated stormy weather, has been on the move. At 0830 hours IST on October 22nd, this depression was positioned approximately 590 kilometers south of Paradip, 740 kilometers south of Digha, and 880 kilometers south-southwest of Khepupara, Bangladesh”. The forecast for this depression is equally concerning, as it is expected to move in a northwest direction and intensify into a Deep Depression (DD) within the next 12 hours.

“The projected trajectory for this depression includes a recurve and a subsequent northeastern movement within the span of three days, with Bangladesh and the West Bengal coasts potentially facing its impact. The combination of these meteorological phenomena underscores the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of our planet’s weather systems, reminding us to remain vigilant and prepared in the face of these natural forces”.

In such circumstances, staying updated with the latest weather advisories and heeding the instructions of local authorities remains paramount. The safety and well-being of communities in the affected regions are of utmost importance, and timely precautions can go a long way in mitigating the impact of these meteorological events.
