Troughs and Cyclonic Circulation:
At mean sea level, a trough extends from south Sri Lanka to the west-central Bay of Bengal off the south Andhra Pradesh coast. Simultaneously, a cyclonic circulation is observed over southwest Uttar Pradesh, with a trough running from this circulation to north Gujarat in the lower tropospheric levels. These atmospheric configurations play a significant role in shaping the weather conditions across the region.
Dense Fog and Cold Day Warning:
The next few days bring warnings of dense to very dense fog in various regions. Night and morning hours are expected to witness such conditions in parts of Punjab and isolated pockets of Haryana-Chandigarh from January 7th to 9th. Similar scenarios are anticipated in West Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam & Meghalaya, Mizoram & Tripura, and north Rajasthan on different dates during this period. Additionally, Cold Day to Severe Cold Day conditions are likely to persist in some parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on January 7th and 8th, with isolated pockets experiencing Cold Day conditions in Rajasthan on January 8th.
Temperature Forecast and Cold Wave Warning:
Over the next five days, no significant changes in minimum temperatures are expected in northern parts of the country. Fortunately, no cold wave conditions are anticipated during this period.
Rainfall Forecast and Heavy Rainfall Warning:
Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Lakshadweep are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall over the next 4-5 days. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu from January 7th to 10th, over Kerala on January 7th, 8th, and 10th, and over Andhra Pradesh on January 8th. Coastal Tamil Nadu may witness isolated very heavy rainfall on January 7th and 8th.
A Western Disturbance in the middle tropospheric westerlies is influencing the weather, resulting in light isolated rainfall/snowfall in Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on January 9th. Plains of Northwest India and Central India are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on January 8th and 9th. Additionally, isolated hailstorms are expected over East Rajasthan on January 8th and 9th, and over West Madhya Pradesh on January 8th. Light rainfall at isolated places is forecasted over Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal & Sikkim on January 6th.
Fishermen Warning:
From January 7th to 10th, squally weather with wind speeds of 40-45 km/h gusting to 55 km/h is likely along and off the Tamil Nadu coast, adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar & adjoining Comorin Area. Fishermen are strongly advised not to venture into these areas during this period for their safety.
