Africa Day: Celebrating the Rich Heritage and Achievements of the Continent

25-05-2023

Africa Day, also known as African Liberation Day, commemorates the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, 1963, which later became the African Union (AU).

Africa Day was originally called African Freedom Day and was renamed Africa Day in 2002 to emphasize the celebration of African achievements rather than just liberation from colonialism.

The OAU, which was established on Africa Day in 1963, initially consisted of 32 African nations. Today, the African Union has 55 member states.

The African Union's headquarters are located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, reflecting the city's historical significance as the political capital of Africa.

Africa Day celebrations often include vibrant parades, cultural performances, concerts, art exhibitions, film screenings, and conferences across the continent and in African diaspora communities worldwide.
