From Mosquitoes to Mortality: Understanding the Complexities of Dengue Infection
Dengue is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus (DENV).
It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes.
About half of the world's population is at risk of dengue, with an estimated 100-400 million infections occurring each year.
Dengue is primarily found in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas.
While many DENV infections are mild or asymptomatic, severe cases can occur and even lead to death.
Prevention & control of dengue depends on vector control, which includes measures such as insecticide spraying & elimination of mosquito breeding sites.
There is currently no specific treatment for dengue or severe dengue, but early detection & access to proper medical care can greatly reduce fatality rates of severe dengue.
