Kerala govt bans fishing for 52 days to protect fish breeding season

1-06-2023

The Kerala government, under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, has imposed a 52-day trawling ban in the state's seas, effective from June 10 to July 31.

Trawlers are instructed to stay 12 nautical miles away from Kerala's seas during the ban period.

The trawling ban, an annual practice since 1988, aims to protect the breeding season of fish and ensure their sustainable population growth.

Traditional fishermen are exempted from the ban, as they use non-mechanized methods and have a minimal impact on fish breeding.

Kerala has 222 fishing villages along its coast, and the total number of fishermen is estimated to be over 10 lacks.

During the ban, the state government provides ration supplies to affected fishermen and their families, who are prohibited from venturing out into the sea.

The Fisheries Department in Kerala has initiated the Punargaeham scheme to rehabilitate fishermen's families residing within 50 meters of the High Tide Line (HTL).
