Manipur Government Extends Internet Suspension to Maintain Law and Order

17-05-2023

The Manipur government has prolonged the suspension of internet services, including mobile data, broadband, and social media platforms, until May 20.

The decision is based on police reports of fighting and arson among volunteers and youths from major communities in Manipur. The government aims to prevent the misuse of social media for spreading hate speech and inciting public unrest.

The internet suspension is intended to stop the spread of disinformation and false rumors through various social media platforms and SMS. It aims to prevent the mobilization of agitators and demonstrators, which could lead to violence and property damage.

Manipur's security advisor, Kuldeep Singh, has introduced a dedicated phone number (9485280461) for reporting and addressing rumors. The helpline aims to ensure accurate information dissemination and minimize the impact of misinformation.

Mobile internet services were initially banned on May 3, followed by a complete ban on all other forms of internet, including broadband, on May 4.
