Mob Violence in Manipur: Venue Set on Fire Before Chief Minister's Program

28-04-2023

A mob vandalized and set on fire the venue where Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh was scheduled to hold a program in the state's Churachandpur district.

The incident took place before the chief minister was to inaugurate a gym-cum-sports facility on Friday.

The Internet has been temporarily banned, and Section 144 has been imposed in Churachandpur following the violence.

Local police quickly swung into action and dispersed the mob, but the venue has already been damaged with hundreds of burning chairs.

The violence was reportedly led by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum, which has been objecting to the state government's survey of reserved and protected forest areas, as well as the recent demolition of churches.

The Kuki Students' Organisation has also supported the forum with allegations of showing a stepmotherly attitude to the tribals of the state.

The district administration is yet to confirm if the chief minister's program has been canceled due to the violence.
