Provence is a geographical region and historical province of southeastern France. 

It extends from the left bank of the lower Rhône to the west to the Italian border to the east; it is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the south. 

The region was the first Roman province beyond the Alps, called Provincia Romana, which evolved into the present name. 

The 7th century BC saw traders from the island of Rhodes visiting the coast of Provence. 

The first Greek settlement was Massalia. 

The ancient world's major trading ports included Massalia. 

Some of the earliest known sites of human habitation in Europe are on the coast of Provence. 

The oldest city in France is Marseille and the biggest city in Provence is also Marseille.
