Rahul Gandhi found guilty in Modi surname defamation case

Mar 23, 2023

Rahul Gandhi has been found guilty of defaming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surname.

The case was filed by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker in 2019.

Gandhi had made the remarks during a political rally in the run-up to the 2019 general elections.

The court found that Gandhi's comments were "incorrectly attributed to the PM and amounted to defaming him and his family's reputation."

Rahul Gandhi has been asked to pay a fine of Rs. 15,000 in the case.

This is not the first time Gandhi has been embroiled in a defamation case. He has faced several such cases in the past.

The verdict is expected to have political implications as the BJP is likely to use it to attack the Congress party in upcoming elections
