Rahul Gandhi Granted Bail in Defamation Case by Surat Sessions Court
03-04-2023
Rahul Gandhi, a Congress leader, has been granted bail by a sessions court in Surat, Gujarat in a defamation case.
The court will hear his appeal against conviction on April 13 and has issued a notice to the complainant to respond by April 10.
Rahul Gandhi had sought a stay on conviction and suspension of the 2-year sentence, but the court refused to grant it without hearing all sides.
The Congress leader was convicted by a lower court and sentenced to prison for two years last month for a speech in which he linked PM Modi's last name with two fugitive businessmen.
The court had granted him bail for 30 days to appeal the verdict, but he was disqualified as a member of the Lok Sabha a day later.
Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reached Surat today via a commercial flight to appeal against the lower court ruling.
If the sessions court upholds the conviction, Rahul Gandhi will be barred from contesting elections for eight years.
