Supreme Court Upholds Allahabad HC's Order for Removal of Mosque from Its Premises
The mosque was built on the premises of a government school in Barabanki in 1949.
In 1995, the school authorities filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court seeking the removal of the mosque from the premises.
The high court, in its order in 2001, directed the authorities to remove the mosque from the school premises and relocate it to a suitable location.
The matter was then taken to the Supreme Court, which referred it back to the Allahabad High Court for reconsideration.
In 2019, the high court once again ordered the removal of the mosque, citing the need to preserve the secular character of the school.
The mosque committee challenged the order in the Supreme Court, but the court has now upheld the high court's order.
The court has given the authorities three months to remove the mosque and relocate it to a suitable location, failing which they will be liable for contempt of court.
