The Group of Seven, or G7, is an intergovernmental political forum made up of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and The USA. The European Union (EU) is an additional, “non-enumerated member”.
The organization is officially based around shared values of pluralism and representative government, with members coming from the world’s largest IMF advanced economies and liberal democracies.
As of 2020, G7 members account for over half of global net wealth (at over $200 trillion), as well as 32 to 46 percent of global gross domestic product, and 10 percent of the world’s population (over 770 million people).
Great powers in global affairs, members maintain mutually close political, economic, diplomatic, and military relations. The G7, which originated from an ad hoc gathering of finance ministers in 1973, has become a formal, high-profile venue for discussing and coordinating solutions to major global issues, In these areas, trade, security, economics, and climate change are of particular importance.
The heads of government or state for each member, the Commission President of the EU, and the Council President meet annually at the G7 Summit; other high-ranking officials of The G7 and the EU meet at various times throughout the year. Since 1997, Russia has been a formal member of the Group of Eight, and representatives of other states and international organizations are often invited as guests. Although the G7 is not based on a treaty, it does have a permanent secretariat and office.
The presidency of the organization rotates annually among member states, with the presiding state setting group priorities, and hosting and organizing its summit. Germany is scheduled to preside in 2022.
The G7 is considered to have significant international influence, even though it doesn’t have a legal or institutional basis. It has started several major global initiatives, such as efforts to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, give financial aid to developing countries, and deal with climate change through the 2015 Paris Agreement.
