Why do toilets in Italy have no seats?

As someone who’s lived in Italy for a while now, I can tell you that there’s one thing about toilets here that can be really confusing for foreigners: they usually don’t have seats! So why is that?

Well, there are a few reasons. First of all, it’s more hygienic to not have a seat, since it’s easier to clean the entire toilet without one. Secondly, it saves water, since you don’t have to flush as much. And finally, it’s just more practical, since you don’t have to worry about putting the seat up or down when you’re done.

In Italy, the law requires that all public toilets must be seatless. This is because, according to health regulations, it is better for the hygiene of the user and the cleaning staff.

With no seats, there are no nooks and crannies for bacteria to hide in, and the entire toilet can be easily and thoroughly cleaned. This also eliminates the need for users to touch anything other than their own bodies when using the facilities.
Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule, and you might find a toilet with a seat in some places. But for the most part, you’ll just have to get used to the idea of sitting on a bare toilet!
